Umstead Graduates

Tyler Umstead graduated cum laude from Slippery Rock High School during commencement ceremonies held on June 4, 2010.

During his school career, he played baseball and soccer with the Prospect Boys and Girls Club, played Butler Dek Hockey, was a member of Teens Against Tobacco Abuse (T.A.T.A.) and Teens Against Drug Abuse (T.A.D.A.), was a member of the National Honor Society and a member of Slide Show. His team from his advanced ecology class won first place in the Butler County Envirothon recently and travelled to Danville, Pa., to compete at the state competition. He took advantage of the Dual Enrollment Program with Slippery Rock University and achieved six credits toward his college career.

Tyler received his Eagle Scout rank from Boy Scouts of America August 28, 2008. His Eagle project was landscaping and beautification around the Presbyterian Church of Portersville in which he is a member. He also participated in Vacation Bible School, Adventure Club and Youth Group while attending his church. He spent his summer of 2009 as a camp counselor at Camp Bucoco for Boy Scouts and Camp Agawam for Cub Scouts. Tyler is also a member of the Order of the Arrow.

He received an award for student of the month from the Portersville-Prospect Rotary as well as receiving a scholarship from this organization. He will be attending Westminister College in the fall and plans to major in chemistry with future plans of pursuing a career in environmental chemistry.

Tyler is the son of Daniel and Jill (Brant) Umstead of Butler. Grandparents are Dean and Faye Brant of Harrisonville and Russell and Loretta Umstead of Volant, Pa.
