From The Files of May 22, 1980 ’80 Tom Johnston of McLaughlin’s Drug Store was on a hunting trip to Ontario last week and came home acting like the Great White Hunter.

With just one shot from his 308 Savage, he brought down a 425-pound black bear and with another single shot tagged a timber wolf.

The Southern Fulton School Board adopted what amounts to a deficit budget for 1980-81 and voted for a 21- mill increase in property taxes. Currently, property taxes stand at 39 mills. Central Fulton adopted their budget last week, and the $2,162,990 total will require a 10 mill real estate tax increase.

The Harris Hotel, Lincoln Way West, was torn down last week. The First National Bank, owners of the property, plan to make a “mini park” on the lot where the old hotel once stood.

Engagement: Mr. and Mrs. Blair Hann of Big Cove Tannery wish to announce the engagement of their daughter, Via Elaine, to Michael Alan Shaw, son of Mr. and Mrs. Shaw of Needmore.

Area students graduating from Shippensburg State College in ceremonies held on May 10 included: Donna L. Harris, with a BA in sociology and Jeffrey C. Mellott with a BA in journalism, both from McConnellsburg, and Mamie Ramsey, Three Springs, with a degree in journalism.

Mr. and Mrs. George Gress of Harrisonville recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at a reception in the Asbury educational building. They were married February 10, 1955.

Harry Elvey, McConnellsburg, was presented recently with a certificate of commendation by the State Fish Commission for 30 years of service as special waterways patrolman. Elvey was the first patrolman to serve only Fulton County. Before he was appointed, a patrolman served both Bedford and Fulton counties.

Births at the Medical Center: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. George Shotts Jr., Hustontown, on May 14; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Michael D. McQuade of McConnellsburg on May 13; a son to Mr. and Mrs. John Swisher of Warfordsburg on May 14; a daughter to Mr. and John Smith of Hustontown on May 13; a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. William F. Bennett of Hustontown on May 9; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Robert C. Sipes of Warfordsburg on May 15.

Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ficks of McConnellsburg were recently honored with a 25th wedding anniversary celebration in the Fort Loudon community center.

Mr. and Mrs. Morrow Kendall of McConnellsburg were honored at an open house celebration on the occasion for their 25th wedding anniversary recently.
