Gas Drilling On Hold Until Regulations Are Set
WEST TRENTON, N.J. (AP) – The Delaware River Basin Commission says it is drafting regulations for gas drilling in shale formations and will not approve any projects until the new rules are established.
DRBC Executive Director Carol Collier said Wednesday that the drafting process is already under way, so it makes sense to hold off approving any projects before the regulations are in place.
That includes a controversial proposal by a Louisiana company to extract gas from a well in the northern Pocono Mountains.
Opponents of gas drilling say it will threaten their drinking water and aquifers. Supporters say it will bring money and jobs to an area that needs both.
