20 Years Ago From The Files of May 10, 1990
four states and a crowd estimated at between 1,500 and 2,000 persons assembled for a memorial service for Hustontown firefighters James F. Chestnut Jr., Richard L. Hershey and Thomas L. Lane, who died tragically Tuesday, May 1. Firefighters from Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia began assembling early that afternoon for a procession of firefighting equipment from the Hustontown Firehall to the Forbes Road High School, where the memorial service was held. Once the massive crowd was assembled, with 1,000 or more persons packing the auditorium and countless more filling the school’s cafeteria and six classrooms, the memorial service was begun by Rev. Dr. David R. Hoover, chaplain of the Franklin- Fulton Firemen’s Association.
At one time the annual Strawberry Festival held on the courthouse lawn was one of the biggest community events of the year, and this year the Chamber of Commerce has decided to bring back the good old days and make it a twoday event on June 8 and 9.
Jack Sherman has received word that he is eligible for the 1990 trophy in the Virginia Salt Water Fishing Tournament for the largest black drum he caught while fishing at Cabbage Patch at Virginia Beach April 27. His prize fish weighed 71 pounds.
McConnellsburg Jaycees held their annual banquet April 21. “Boss of the Year” was presented to Mellott Wood Preserving Co. Inc., and Paul Johnston received the “Jaycee of the Year” award.

Births at the Medical Center: a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Ray McGee of Spring Run on April 28; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Lynch of Needmore on April 30; a son to Mr. and Mrs. Michael McSpirit of Chambersburg on May 2.
