Man To Stand Trial In Robber y, Abandoning Boy
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A Philadelphia man suspected of abandoning his son during a jewelry store robbery will stand trial on robbery and attempted murder charges.
Forty-seven-year-old John Benson was held for trial Thursday on charges related to the Feb. 27 robbery of a jewelry store in the city’s South Street neighborhood.
Police say Benson and 31- year-old Sheakia (shuh- KEE-uh) Stubbs took their 4-year-old son with them when they robbed the Platinum and Ice jewelry store on Feb. 27. Investigators say they made off with items worth tens of thousands of dollars but abandoned the boy after Benson slashed the store owner who gave chase.
Benson is being held on $1 million bail.
Stubbs is being held on $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing for her is scheduled for May 13.
