’80 Fulton countians voiced their preferences for Jimmy Carter as the Democratic choice and Ronald Reagan as the Republican choice for

president in Tuesday’s primary election, according to unofficial vote tallies. While the statewide results are not expected to be as clear cut, locally Carter beat Edward Kennedy, his closest challenger, by almost 4-1. Carter got 882 votes, while Kennedy received 263.

James Samuel Clayton, 69, of Mercersburg, was pronounced dead at the scene of a farm tractor accident on a farm he owned near Harrisonville on Friday. According to the coroner’s report, Clayton died of a crushed chest and compound fracture of the right leg at about 10:00 a.m. Friday when the tractor he was operating overturned and rolled over him. Police reported that the Mercersburg area man was using the tractor to mend fence on his property in Fulton County, located two miles northwest of Harrisonville on T-419. He was operating the tractor on an embankment at an approximate 40 degree angle when it rolled over one and a half times, coming to rest upside down in a small pond, 30 feet from where it upset.
