Iceland Volcano Strands 12 Pa. College Students
CARLISLE, Pa. (AP) – Twelve Pennsylvania college students who traveled to Iceland to research sustainable energy are now stranded there because of a volcanic eruption.
The students from DickinsonCollege in Carlisle have been studying abroad in England but traveled to Iceland last week with their geology professor.
The group arrived on the island nation Tuesday, the day before a volcano there spewed massive amounts of ash into the air.
The students had been scheduled to return to England’s University of East Anglia on Friday. But the volcanic ash cloud has grounded flights throughout Europe.
Professor Marcus Key says the group went to the Icelandic capital Reykjavik (RAYK’-yah-vik) to study hydroelectricity and geothermal plants.
