Cowans Gap Activities
April 24 – Celebrate Earth Day!
Earth Day just marked its 40th anniversary, so why not celebrate with a day at Cowans Gap? At 10:00 a.m. come participate in Birding for Beginners. This program is designed for folks new to birding who want to hone their skills of bird identification, and is best suited for ages 10 and up. Field guides and some binoculars will be provided, or feel free to bring your own. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
After lunch, show off your crafty side with Recycled Crafts. See what you can make with items most people might throw away. All ages are invited to join in the fun! This program begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
April 28 – Child’s Play: Bring your preschool-age children to the park for some fun and learning! Today’s theme is observing nature. Activities for this program may include a story, craft, outdoor exploration or other activity. Playtime can sometimes be messy, so be sure your children are dressed in play clothes and shoes, and have appropriate attire for the outdoors. Child’s Play will begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 11:00 a.m.

DiscoverE kids’ summer programs
It’s that time of year again – time for kids’ summer programs! Cowans Gap is offering several DiscoverE programs for children ages 4-12.
Hide-n-Seekers (ages 4- 5) will enjoy “Nature Tots,” a two-day program designed for young children. Stories, games, crafts, songs, hikes, and much more are all part of this fun program. Children should be dressed in play clothes and will need to bring a snack and drink each day. This program will be offered July 21 and 22, from 9 a.m. to noon each day.
Outdoor Explorers (ages 6-8) will have the opportunity to choose between two different programs. On June 24, children will learn about the lives of underwater creatures in “Underwater Wonders.” On July 15, children discover the world of sixlegged creatures in “Investigating Insects.” Both programs will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include hikes, games, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. Children should dress in play clothes and will need to bring a lunch and drink.
Penn’s Adventurers (ages 9-12) will also have the opportunity to choose between two different programs. On June 17 and 18, children will learn about the lives of plants, insects, and animals connected with watery habitats in “Water World.” On August 12 and 13, children explore the past in “History Happens.” Both programs will be held from 9am-1:30 p.m. and include crafts, hikes, demonstrations, hands-on outdoor activities and creative writing. Children should dress in play clothes, and will need to bring a lunch and drink each day. To register your child, please call the park office at 717-485-3948. Registration for each class closes one week before the first day of that class, or when the roster for that class is filled. DiscoverE programs at Cowans Gap are free of charge, but donations are always welcome.
