Make A Difference Day May 1

Simple Acts of Kindness, a local outreach program of Christian Social Service, is busy preparing for Fulton County Make a Difference Day to be held on Saturday, May 1, 2010. The day will consist of various volunteer projects by, and for, our neighbors in Fulton County. The main focus of Make a Difference Day is that anyone can get involved, from the very young to the very old.

Here is a list of the projects scheduled for Fulton County Make a Difference Day:

Simple yardwork/clean-up; senior entertainment(nursing home and senior apartments); senior visitation; “Lovin’ from the Oven (casseroles to seniors); military packages; Pamper Me project (hair and nails for seniors); Lions Park clean up; Hearts for Haiti (collection of needed items for Haiti); deliver flowerpots/tomato buckets to senior/shut-ins; newborn/ toddler kits for WIC program; sewing lap blankets for nursing home; lunch team (prepare and deliver lunches to volunteers); cookie club (deliver/send to local service agencies); nursery team (childcare day of event); community yard sale/clothing swap; blood drive and bone marrow drive; community carwash (proceeds to designated cause); advance team (prep work prior to event); building box gardens for Food Basket and senior apartments); and photography (pictures of various projects day of event).

Many local churches, businesses, and schools are already participating in these events. Mc- Connellsburg Elementary, Southern Fulton Elementary and Southern Fulton High School are collecting hygiene products, sneakers and flip-flops for Haiti. The following businesses have a drop box for Haiti collection items of hygiene products and canned food: Save-A-Lot, Community State Bank, Tower Bank (McConnellsburg and Needmore), Ott Brothers, JLG, Tri-State, Kimmel Insurance Agency, Dott Store and Fulton County Library. This collection is organized by the sisters of the Saint Stephen Catholic Church, who are working to fill a 40-foot sea crate with items to send to Haiti.

The Methodist Church in Mc- Connellsburg will be organizing the community clothing swap, where anyone is welcome to pick up and drop off yard sale items. This will be held in the large storage shed below the Methodist Church.

The Presbyterian Church will be hosting a blood drive and bone marrow donor drive. Please make time to donate blood and consider registering to be a bone marrow donor. Bone marrow registry is easy and involves a simple cheek swab and the completion of a medical history form.

Childcare will be provided for volunteers with children ages 5 and under at the Cito United Methodist Church.
