Sprint car racing wrapped up in Florida late last week as Pennsylvania’s Mark Smith scored the All-Star Sprint car win Thursday night at East Bay Raceway Park.
Smith was running third with Terry McCarl, took out leader Tim Shaffer late in the race to give Smith the $3,000 payday and his first-ever Florida win.
Cap Henry was second over Pennsylvania drivers Lance Dewease and Greg Hodnett, with Stevie Smith fifth over Doug Esh, Rob Chaney, Greg Wilson, Daryn Pittman and Fred Rahmer.
Rain forced cancellation of the events at East Bay on Friday and the races were canceled Saturday due to cold and wet weather. So the Sprint car teams basically sat down there a week after VSP to race one night. The 410 teams lost four shows to the weather this season in Florida.
The World of Outlaws late models were in action across town at Volusia Speedway Park where 2009 champion Josh Richards kicked off the season with a win on Thursday night after starting in the 17th spot. Richards scored the win over Earl Pearson, Jr., Brady Smith, Tim McCreadie and Steve Francis.
In Saturday’s WoO late model finale at VSP, Brady Smith scored the victory over Pearson, Mc- Creadie, Richards and Shannon Babb with York’s Rick Eckert coming home seventh.
The Central PA 358 Sprint Series recently announced a big sponsorship for the upcoming racing season where Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic will serve as the major sponsor for the series. All 358 Sprint car races will be included in the overall point series with the top 10 drivers each night receiving points. The season champion will earn $6,000 and the top 12 point drivers will earn a payoff. It’s by far the largest point fund payout for the 358 sprint series in Central PA.
Lincoln Speedway has postponed its February 27th Icebreaker to March 6 and that is still dependent on a large amount of snow having to melt from the Hanover facility in order to go racing. Mother Nature sure laid a dandy on us this year! As of Sunday, Hagerstown Speedway was still on for February 27th.
