Dorothy O. Shives

Dorothy O. Shives, 85, Big Cove Tannery, died Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Donahoe Manor, Bedford.

She was born in Needmore March 28, 1924, the daughter of the late Clemmie B. and Georgia (Deshong) Truax. She was the widow of A. Reed “Pete” Shives, whom she married November 20, 1943. He passed away June 22, 2001.

She was a member of Pleasant Ridge Church of the Brethren, Needmore, and currently attended Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church. She also was a past member of Warfordsburg Lioness Club. In her earlier years, she worked on the family farm and sawmill, Ralph DeShong’s butcher shop, Mellott’s Snak Shak and also was employed by Sagner sewing factory in McConnellsburg, until its closing.

She is survived by daughters: Betty (wife of Greg) Shaffer, Breezewood; Debra (wife of Lonnie) Palmer, Warfordsburg; sons: William R. (husband of Paula) Shives, Needmore; Gary L. (husband of Penny) Shives, Harrisonville; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brother Thurman “Bun” Truax and great-granddaughter, Brittany Leann Whitfield.

Funeral services will be held at Warfordsburg Presbyterian Church, at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, February 18. Rev. Edward Blank and Rev. Roger Truax will officiate. Interment will be at Pleasant Ridge Brethren Cemetery, Needmore.

There will be visitation on Wednesday, February 17, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home Inc., Mc- Connellsburg. There will also be visitation one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142 or the charity of one’s choice.
