Russell M. Shoemaker Sr.
Russell Melvin Shoemaker Sr., 84, a resident of Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg, formerly of Greencastle, died at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 26, 2010, in the nursing home. He had been in failing health for the past several years and critically ill since November 2009.
Born August 8, 1925, in Letterkenny Township, he was the son of the late Charles W. and Helen Mae (Over) Shoemaker. He spent his early life in the Chambersburg area.
He received his GED and later earned his degree in engineering.
He and his wife, Mary Helen (Keckler) Shoemaker, were married December 14, 1951, in Hagerstown. They resided at their Westview Circle home for more than 45 years. He entered the nursing home in 2004.
He was employed by Grove Worldwide, Shady Grove, P.a, and later as a hydraulic engineer at Landis Tool Co., Waynesboro, before retiring in 1992. He also served as a supervisor for Greencastle for 11 years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Greencastle, and Greencastle Senior Center. He also had a love for airplanes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters: Kimberly J. Laman, Greencastle; Lisa K. Shaw, Hagerstown; Melanie A. Shoemaker, Greencastle; two sons: Russell M. Shoemaker Jr., Big Cove Tannery; Douglas E. Shoemaker, Greencastle; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Meyers, Fayetteville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, January 29, in First United Methodist Church, Greencastle. Pastor Stacy Crawford officiated. Burial was made in Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg.
Miller-Bowersox Funeral Home, Greencastle, was in charge of arrangements.
