Fulton County Quilt Club To Offer Anniversary Classes
To celebrate its 30th anniversary, The Fulton County Quilt Club is renewing itself by offering a series of five free courses in basic quilt-making to new and existing members. Anyone interested in quilting is invited to attend the “From the Beginning” series, starting at the Quilt Club’s first 2010 meeting in January. The classes will teach everything from what kind of needles to use to how to bind and care for a quilt and all the steps in between. Members can attend classes without signing up for the entire series.
January’s class will be taught by Regina Parson and will include topics on selecting needles, thread, batting and notions. Color and fabric selection will be covered in February by Debra Ward. Barbara Nellemann is teaching accurate rotary cutting and perfect ¼” piecing during the March meeting. In April, Helen Clusman will demonstrate how to make the quilt “sandwich” and how to hand quilt. The final class of the series, taught at the May meeting, will feature Karen Witmer on machine quilting. At the end of the course, each participant will have the knowledge and skill to make a small quilt!!
The club is an educational, nonprofit organization and its mission is to increase interest in the art of quilting in Fulton County. Club membership dues are only $10 per year, so it subsists mainly on money raised from selling tickets for a quilt made by club members and raffled at the quilt show during the Fulton Fall Folk Festival. In addition to the annual quilt show, the club has a booth and teaches hand quilting at the Strawberry Festival in June, and also sponsors an educational booth at the Fulton County Fair in August. Funds are used to teach classes, buy materials for the club’s charity projects and the raffle quilt, provide cash prizes at the quilt show, and to make a donation of quilting supplies to Forbes Road School for sewing classes. The club is very fortunate and appreciative to be able to meet and to have the quilt show in F&M Bank’s Fulton Theatre.
This past year, the quilt club made and donated quilts to two county nonprofit organizations: a reproduction antique quilt to the Fulton County Historical Society and a quilt used as a fund raiser to the Fulton County Library. Previously, the club made and donated a quilt to the Fulton County Medical Center, also used by them as a fundraiser. One of the projects for 2010 includes making crib quilts to be given to the Women, Infant and Children’s organization.
The club meets at 10 a.m. on the third Saturday of every month except August and December at the old Fulton Theatre in McConnellsburg. They work hard, have fun, and learn the latest tricks of the trade!
