Ivan W. Mearkle Sr., 86, Clearville, died Friday, January 1, 2010, at UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital.

He was born on March 7, 1923, in Clearville, Pa., a son of the late John Thomas and Ada Ruth (Clabaugh) Mearkle.

On January 26, 1942, in Hagerstown, Md., he married the former Pauline V. Smith. She survives him.

Also surviving are five children: Shirley A., married to Thomas Bussard, Breezewood; Kenneth L. Mearkle, married to Leigia (Galanenes), San Juan, Puerto Rico; L. Carol married to Donald Clark, Clearville; Betty L. married to Victor Clark, Menchtown; Ivan W. Mearkle Jr. married to Carol A. (Black), Clearville; one sister, Zada May, Clearville; 17 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by the following sisters and brothers: Lester Mearkle, Henry Mearkle, Elva Logue, John W. Mearkle and Hazel Mendelson.

He was a member of Stevens Chapel United Methodist Church.

He owned and operated Hickory Lane Farm for many years until his retirement.

He was an avid deer and rabbit hunter. He enjoyed watching Westerns, baseball and spending time with his grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at 11:00 a.m., in the chapel at Akers Funeral Home. Pastor Jay Saxe officiated. Burial was private.
