PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl has vetoed a bill passed unanimously by the City Council that would have required businesses to pay certain workers at prevailing wages.

Ravenstahl delivered his veto around 3:30 p.m. Thursday, after most council members had left the building for New Year’s Eve. Council President Doug Shields could only get five council members’ votes for a special meeting to override the veto, one vote less than he needed.

The bill would have guaranteed hotel, cafeteria and building maintenance workers at future city-subsidized development sites wages equal to the average of their peers citywide. Ravenstahl says the bill would hurt Pittsburgh by encouraging developers to locate large projects outside the city.
