Church Gets $1.1M From Miner’s Estate
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) – A Lutheran church in southwestern Pennsylvania is sharing the wealth of a $1.1 million offering left to the congregation by a coal miner who died earlier this year.
Joseph Raymond, of Uniontown, was 90 when he died in June.
He attended St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in South Union Township for more than 60 years, and the childless widower left $1.1 million of his $1.4 million estate to the church. The rest went to charities and some nieces and nephews.
The church has decided to pay off its $150,000 mortgage with the bequest, but parishioners have decided to give much of the rest to other charity’s in the area.
