The 2009 edition of Mc- Connellsburg Spartans’ boys basketball team will be the host team for the 2009 Intercounty Conference North South Challenge. Two of the ICC northern teams, Mt. Union and Southern Huntingdon, will challenge two of the ICC southern teams, Fannett Metal and host team Mc- Connellsburg. This will be the second year of the Challenge, which used to be the Southern Huntingdon Tip-off tournament. The format has changed from years past, and the schools will rotate hosting the Challenge at each of their respective schools.

This year’s team will be under the direction of new head coach Bob Paruch. He will be assisted by Denny Swope

“The seniors are very excited to be the host team for the first time in this Challenge series,” says Paruch. “We have six seniors on the team and we have been working very hard. We want to make this a memorable tournament on our home court in our last season,” says senior forward Defibaugh.

The schedule of games for the opening weekend of PIAA high school basketball is Friday, December 11, at 6:00 p.m.; Southern Huntingdon vs. Fannett-Metal, and at 7:45 p.m. Mt. Union will play Mc- Connellsburg. On Saturday, December 12, at 6:00 p.m., Fannett-Metal vs. Mt. Union, and at 7:45 p.m., Southern Huntingdon will play Mc- Connellsburg.

Admission for the games is adults $4 and students $2, and concessions will be available. This is the first time Mc- Connellsburg has ever hosted such an event and community support for these young athletes would be greatly appreciated.
