Nathan B. Hixson
He was born on September 12, 1937, in Everett, Pa., son of the late W. Veryl and Mary Blanche (Walters) Hixson. On July 14, 1961, in Cherrylane Church of the Brethren, he married the former Vera E. (Dodson) Hixson, she preceded him in death on October 5, 2008.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann, married to Daryl Poet, Crystal Spring; two grandchildren: Natalie J. Keebaugh and Nathan J. Keebaugh of Crystal Spring; one brother, Ronald V. Hixson and Leona (Smith) Hann, Everett; and many nieces and nephews and a granddog: Tallen “Rover.”
He was preceded in death by a sister, Edna J. “Jeannie” Hixson.
He was a member of Akersville Methodist Church and attended Breezewood Lighthouse Assembly of God, Breezewood, where he previously served as a deacon.
He served in the United States National Guard for seven years.
He was a graduate of Southern Fulton High School Class of 1955.
He and his wife owned and operated Dog Valley Farm for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1997. He was recognized for having one of the topproducing herds of registered black and white Holsteins in the county.
He was a charter member of Brush Creek Ruritan Club, served as a community committee person for 27 years and county board member for five years of the ASCS and Farm Service Agency U.S. Department of Agriculture and was secretary for the Akersville Cemetery Association for more than 40 years.
He was a former member of Fulton County Extension Board, and previously served as Brush Creek Township supervisor.
He enjoyed collecting hats, with a collection of more than 2,000, gathering for coffee with the guys at the Crystal Spring Store and supporting the Southern Fulton volleyball and Buck Valley Little League teams.
He was very active in his grandchildren’s sporting events and all the other activities they were involved in. He was a great and loving father, brother, grandfather and friend that will be sadly missed. He was “Pap” to many.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Breezewood Lighthouse Assembly of God, Breezewood. Rev. Herb Wireback officiated. Burial was at Akersville Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Everett Area Honor Guard.
Akers Funeral Home, Everett, was in charge of arrangements.
