Mother Nature continued her dislike for auto racing over the weekend as all local racing was washed out by the long stretch of rain that lasted for four days.
Williams Grove Speedway canceled both its final points night for the Friday and Saturday night programs, while Lincoln Speedway had its Saturday finale rained out as well.
With the rain stopping the Grove for an 18th time this season, Todd Shaffer will be crowned the 410 Sprint car driver champion, but Jim and Sandy Kline will receive top money for being the 2009 410 Sprint car owner champions for the season. Shaffer led from the first race of the season and never looked back, but the Klines, whose driver Greg Hodnett finished second in points, fielded a car at the Grove while Hodnett was in Knoxville, thus giving them enough points to overtake Shaffer’s car owners. Hodnett also failed to start four features but still only finished 90 points back. Mark Smith actually tied for second in driver points, with Brian Montieth fourth and Fred Rahmer fifth.
The Klines defeated Gary and Patty Beam, Brian Scandle, Jerry Parrish and CJB Motorsports. Shaffer will receive $10,000, while the Kline’s will also receive $10,000.
Cory Haas is the 2009 358 Sprint car champion, his fourth career title, while Carmen Perigo Jr. (Super Sportsman), Gene Knaub (358 Late Models), Kory Sites (Street Stocks) and Brian Wetzel (4-Cylinders) are Saturday Night Series champions.
Coming up this weekend will be Lincoln racing on Friday night with the 410 Sprints and 358 Sprint championship and the Fallfest at Williams Grove on Saturday night, a features-only program for the 410 Sprints, 358 Sprints, 358 Late Models and Super Sportsman.
Hagerstown Speedway is hoping for some good weather this weekend as it presents the 22nd annual Octoberfest 350 for Late Models, Sprints, Small Block and Big Block Modifieds. All qualifying will take place on Saturday with feature racing on Sunday. Each event pays $10,000 to win. The event normally draws between 150 and 200 race teams. Grandstands open at 9:30 a.m. both days.
