Racing Roundup

By Brad Vores

Stevie Smith ended his 2009 racing season in Victory lane Saturday at Lincoln Speedway.

Smith led all 40 laps of the Kenny Weld Memorial to pick up the $6,925 payday in his 12th overall win this season with the Zemco team.

Brian Leppo finished in the runner-up spot over Jim Siegel, Greg Hodnett, Cory Haas, Fred Rahmer, Mark Smith, Lance Dewease, Alan Krimes and Chad Layton.

Jamie Lathroum beat Mother Nature Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway as he captured his first-ever super Late Model win at the track in the makeup Late Model feature that was rained out in March.

Lathroum took the lead on lap seven and drove off from the field for the win over DJ Myers, Jason Covert, Gary Stuhler and Alan Sagi.

Following the Late Model main, rain hit the track, forcing cancellation of the remainder of the Friday night program.

Doug Hendricks scored the Wingless Super Sportsman feature win Saturday at Williams Grove Speedway over Carmen Perigo Jr., Joey Biasi, Scott Dellinger and Bobby Hockenberry.

Gene Knaub came out on top of the two 358 Late Model features, winning a makeup event along with the regularly scheduled event.

Knaub’s makeup win came over Craig Wagaman, Mike Walls, Bernie Beard and Shaun Jones, while he defeated Bobby Beard, Michael Collins, Travis Mease and Roy Miller to win the regular event. The wins were his ninth and 10th overall of the season.

Racin’ Jason Covert came home with the big $10,000 payday in his Sunday night win at the Rumble by the Lake 88-lap Late Model main at Hesston Speedway. Covert took the win over Keith Jackson, Josh Richards, Jack Pencil and Nick Dickson. Frankie Plessinger finished 14th.

That’s a wrap on another weekend as we quickly approach the end of the racing season. Coming up this weekend will be Champions Night at Williams Grove on Friday, while Lincoln has its final show on Saturday night featuring 410 Sprints and 358 Sprints.
