Richard C. Horton
Richard Colby Horton, 25, Broad Top City, died Monday, September 28, 2009, as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
He was born February 14, 1984, in Altoona, a son of Ronald Horton and wife Deanna, Broad Top City; and Tracy (Snyder) Kilcoyne and husband William, Williamsport.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Ronald Horton, Broad Top City; niece Karlee Horton; nephew Kameron Horton; stepbrother Aaron Kilcoyne, Muncy; stepsister Jena Kilcoyne, Jersey Shore; stepbrothers: Justin Wagner, Broad Top City, and Jeremy Wagner, Broad Top City; aunt Janet Hoover, Cooks; cousin Colt Hoover, Cooks; aunt Michelle, wife of Corey McElwee, Saxton; cousin Keisha Musser and son Kayden; Saxton; cousin Dionn Runk, Saxton; cousin Doneisha Runk, Saxton; and cousin Hunter Runk, Saxton; maternal grandmother Delphine Burkett, Wood; paternal grandparents: George and Linda Horton and paternal great-grandmother, Dorothea Black, all of Broad Top City; and numerous extended family members and also his girlfriend, Cassie Shope, Robertsdale.
He was preceded in death by an aunt, Karen Elaine Snyder; and maternal grandfather, Richard “Leroy” Snyder.
He served in the U.S. Navy. His military career covered a sixyear span achieving the rank of petty officer 2nd class. He spent four years on the USS John F. Kennedy based in Jacksonville, Fla., which was deployed in Iraq for six months. His last two years were spent at Pax River Naval Air Station in Pax River, Md. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He also received a citation from the commander of the John F. Kennedy Strike Group for his professional achievement in the superior performance aboard the USS John F. Kennedy. These actions were in support of Operation Iraq Freedom.
He was currently employed by Fastenal in McConnellsburg. During his life he loved exotic animals and the outdoors, including hunting, fishing, camping and kayaking with his brother, Ron. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, especially Karlee and Kameron.
He was a 2002 graduate of Tussey Mountain High School. He attended Broad Top United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, October 2, at Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home Inc., Broad Top City. Pastor Suzanne Detterline officiated. Burial with full military honors was at Broad Top City IOOF Cemetery, Broad Top City.
