Jennings M. Oakman

Jennings Marvin Oakman, 82, Warfordsburg, died Monday, October 5, 2009, at his home, under the care of Lutheran Homecare and Hospice.

He was born in Union Township, Fulton County, August 6, 1927, the son of the late William and Blanche Hamman Oakman. He was the husband of Roberta Birdie Wyant Oakman, whom he married April 18, 1987.

He was a 1945 graduate of Warfordsburg High School.

He served in the United States Navy from 1945-1952 during the World War II era, stationed at Pearl Harbor. He received a diploma from National School in Los Angeles, Calif., for auto mechanics and diesel extension division in 1956. He was awarded a World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed by Union Township as a supervisor for 14 years. He was a substitute mail carrier for many years and was a fruit inspector for the state of Maryland and an inspector for Snyder’s of Berlin.

He was a farmer and a member of the AARP.

He was a member of Buck Valley Lutheran Church and treasurer for 20 years. He attended Hancock Assembly of God.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Wanda Lee Elbin, Warfordsburg, many cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lamont Oakman; infant brother, Eldon Oakman; and a sister, Myreta Stahle.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 9, at 11:00 a.m., at Hancock Assembly of God, Hancock, Md. Rev. Donald Preston, Rev. Robert Smith and Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt Jr. will officiate. Burial, with a military graveside service by Tri-State Honor Guard, will be made in Buck Valley Lutheran Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Hancock Assembly of God, Thursday, October 8, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
