Rare Flamingo Of Mysterious Origin Spotted In Fla.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – Plastic pink flamingos may be all over Florida, but it’s rare to find a real one.

It’s even more rare to see a variety called the “lesser flamingo,’’ native to Africa and Asia. And that’s just what a birder managed to capture in a photo last week in Merritt Island National Refuge.

Experts say it’s the first sighting here of a non-captive lesser flamingo, though greater flamingoes are occasionally seen.

The bird appeared to have an identification band on its leg, but no one’s sure where it came from.

Some of the nearest flocks are at Walt Disney World, the Jacksonville Zoo and an animal park and zoo in Albany, Ga. But none of those facilities have reported a bird missing.
