Celebrate 70th Anniversary

The Longs The Longs Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Long will be celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on September 2, 2009.

Dorothy, the daughter of the late Howard and Elsie Defibaugh of White Church, Bedford County, and Robert, the son of the late Curtis and Jane Long of New Grenada, Fulton County, were united in marriage in 1939 in Three Springs.

They are the parents of seven living children and two sons who died at birth. Their surviving children are Jean Sonnenberg (wife of Louis) of Lewistown; Ethel Ford (wife of Neil) of Three Springs; Nancy Duvall of Hopewell; Susan Faulk (wife of James) of Greencastle; Pam Metzler of Claysburg; Penny Shaffer of Wells Tannery and Robert Long Jr., Wells Tannery. They enjoy their large family, which includes 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Their extended family is widespread, living as close as Wells Tannery, Maddensville and Chambersburg but also in Virginia, Georgia, Alabama and Hawaii.

Bob has always been an avid sportsman, who loved to hunt and fish. He was also quite a marksman. Along with working in the coal mines, being a school custodian, millwright, construction worker and school board member, he always enjoyed planting a large garden.

The Longs Today The Longs Today Dot has been the homemaker and caregiver for their large family. She was always able to provide a beautiful table with canned goods from the garden being supplemented with fish and game harvested by Bob and the necessary grocery items. A wonderful cook and baker, she made bread, pies and cakes for the family and friends that are remembered to this day. Sunday meal times always found the family surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins who enjoyed most of the day with them. They still host many family get-togethers and the birthday parties for many family members. Always the hard workers of their generation, they have now slowed down enough to smell the roses and reminisce about the 70 years they have shared, realizing that not many couples reach this milestone.

The family is hoping all will help them celebrate by sharing good wishes with a card. The address is 269 Enid Road, Wells Tannery, PA 16691.
