Activities At Cowans Gap

August 11 - 8:00 p.m.: Meteor Madness by "Sea." Come and learn about meteors as we wait for darkness and then see if you can spot any shooting stars. This special stargazing event will take place on the water, so bring your canoe or kayak. A limited number of kayaks will also be available to borrow for this program. Please call the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 717-485-9018 to reserve a kayak. Flashlights will not be needed until after the program. Meet at the boat launch parking lot.

August 12 - 8:30 a.m.: Walk the Dog. Bring your four-footed companion along for a morning walk around the lake. Meet at the amphitheater; 1:00 p.m.: Family Backpack Adventure. Adventures begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center with a brief introduction by the park naturalist. After that, families will select a themed backpack, which includes materials for parents to guide their children in fun, outdoor activities. Backpack themes may include birds, butterflies, insects, preschool activities, or others. Backpack numbers are limited, are loaned out on a firstcome, first-served basis, and must be returned by 3:00 pm that day.

August 13 - 9:00 a.m.: GPS Scavenger Hunt. Meet at the Amphitheater; - 1:00 pm: Child's Play. Young children will enjoy this program that includes a story, craft and outdoor activity! Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.

August 14 - 7:30 p.m.: Butterflies & Moths of Cowans Gap. Learn about the butterflies and moths of our area in this slideshow presentation suitable for all ages. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.

August 15 - 7:00 p.m.: Paper Airplane Building Contest. Show us your skills at building paper planes! Create your version of this old classic, then compare your plane to some local birds of prey. Prizes will be awarded for the fastest, most maneuverable, and longest soaring planes. Meet at the amphitheater; 8:30 p.m.: Birds of Prey Discover some of the unique adaptations of birds of prey, as well as the variety of species that exist, in this video presentation at the Amphitheater.

August 16 - 2:00 p.m.: Walk with Mrs. Cowan. This walk will guide visitors on an easy stroll while discovering the history of Cowans Gap. Meet at the beach area.
