Police: Man In Car Crash Jumped In Schuylkill River

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. (AP) - Police say a man trying to evade officers after a crash on the Schuylkill (SKOO'-kill) Expressway near Conshohocken jumped into the river and began swimming.

Police say five cars were involved in a minor accident in Lower Merion Township around 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Police say the man gave false identification when a trooper questioned him about the crash.

When questioned further, police say the man fled, crossing several lanes of the expressway before bounding over a concrete barrier and jumping in the Schuylkill River.

Police say they saw the man begin swimming but never saw him get out of the river.

Montgomery County fire and rescue workers used boats and divers in the search, which was called off at 8 p.m.
