New Master Gardener Class Starting Soon

Penn State Cooperative Extension in Fulton County will again host a master gardener class in McConnellsburg using a video teleconferencing system. The classes will be held on Tuesdays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., beginning on September 8, 2009.

The Penn State Master Gardener Program was established to assist extension in reaching the consumer horticulture audience by using research-based information to educate the public on best practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship. Across Pennsylvania there are now more than 1400 master gardener volunteers.

Graduates of the initial master gardener training program volunteer 50 hours of service their first year and in subsequent years complete eight hours of update training and volunteer 20 hours. Volunteer activities can include community service gardening, workshops and demonstrations, and working with youths. The 2008 Master Gardener Class has volunteered its time this summer establishing a pollinator garden and landscaping at the Lions Club Park, as well as other community gardening activities.

Class size is limited to eight people. Basic to intermediate gardening knowledge is strongly recommended. The class is offered at no cost; however, the cost for the master gardener manual and all materials is $75. For more information or to register, contact Donna Shasserre at the extension office at 717-485- 4111. The deadline for registration is August 14, 2009.
