Somerset Co. Golfer Wins Riggs Open
A field of 95 golfers teed up for Sunday's annual Riggs Open. The 9 a.m. tournament was played as individual stroke play, and prizes were given to the lowest eight net scores, lowest three gross scores and winners of closest to the pins, longest drives and longest putt.
Somerset County golfer Ted Brandt won the tournament with a net score of 66. He received $200. Lee Newell received the $160 second-place prize, having a net score of 69. There was a three-way tie for third place between Pat Shafer, Bill Ables and Ray Wingert.
First place in low gross score was Skeets Ellis, shooting a 73. John Buljat came in second with a 74, and Brett Cornelius, Matt Hale and Eric Osselburn tied for third with 75s.
Ed Kozuch, Gary Bard, Smoke Mellott, Foster Early, Bret Cornelius and Terry Thomas won closest to the pins; Greg Getty and Scott Cromer won longest drives; and Brian Mellott won longest putt. Each player received $25.
Wednesday was the seventh week of Women's League. Currently, the team of Boyle and O'Donnell are in the lead with 30 points. Wagner and Ranck are in second with 26, and Dewitt and Singley are in third with 23.5.
The 13th week of Men's League play saw the teams of Shives and Shives and Mayhugh and Tyson tied for the first-place spot at 11.5 points each. In the third-place spot is the Marshall and Peck team with 11 points.
The next tournaments up at Great Cove are night golf this Friday, July 17, and on Sunday, the Senior Championship.
