Actvities At Cowans Gap
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following weekend activities at Cowans Gap:
July 22 - 1:00 p.m.: Family Backpack Adventure
Families with children are invited to go on an outdoor adventure! Adventures begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center with a brief introduction by the park naturalist. After that, families will select a themed backpack, which includes materials for parents to guide their children in fun, outdoor activities. Backpack themes may include birds, butterflies, insects, preschool activities, or others. These adventures are designed for families to spend some quality time together in the outdoors.
Backpack numbers are limited, are loaned out on a firstcome, first-served basis, and must be returned by 3:00 p.m. that day.
July 23 - 1:00 p.m.: Child's Play
Very young children will enjoy this program that includes a story, craft, and outdoor activity! Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
July 24 - 9:00 a.m.: Child's Play
Very young children will enjoy this program that includes a story, craft and outdoor activity! (This will be a different program from that on July 23.) Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
July 25 - 7:00 p.m.: Bat & Moth
All ages are invited to come learn about bats! We'll explore some of the myths surrounding these mysterious creatures, and find out why bats are such an important part of our world. Meet at the amphitheater; 8:30 p.m.: Bats Eat Bugs! Come participate in a bat count! Annual bat counts help determine the health of our local bat population. Bat counting instruction will be provided. If you'd rather not count, come out anyway and just enjoy watching the bats in flight as they snap up thousands of bugs! Bring a camp chair or blanket to sit on.
July 26 - 2:00 p.m.: Walk with Mrs. Cowan
Come along on a walk with "Mrs. Cowan". Visitors will be treated to some folktales about mammals along this gentle walk suitable for all ages. Meet at the beach area; 5:30 p.m.: Green Team Series: Lakeside Trail Walk
All senior citizens are invited to come along on an evening stroll around the lake. Learn about the history of the park, and examine some of the unique plants and animals of Cowans Gap. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.

Scheduled visitor hours for the Brightbill Interpretive Center this weekend are as follows: Thursday: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Friday: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.; Saturday: 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Sunday: 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
