Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following weekend activities at Cowans Gap:
July 15 - 9:00 a.m.: Green Team Series: Canoeing & Kayaking
All senior citizens are welcome to try out canoeing and/or kayaking. PA Fish & Boat Commission educator Adam Spangler will introduce the group to the basics of paddling, and then lead a trip around the lake. Whether you're an experienced paddler, or if you've never been in a canoe or kayak, this program is for you! Canoes and kayaks will be provided, or feel free to bring your own. Meet at the boat launch parking lot.
July 17 - 7:30 p.m.: Butterfly Babies. Join us for this slideshow presentation on caterpillars. Find out what the caterpillars of some common local butterflies look like and where you may find them. This program is suitable for all ages. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
July 18 - 7:00 p.m.: Yakkin' with the Bats. Join us for a nighttime paddle on the lake. Experience the wonder of watching bats diving and skimming across the lake surface. Learn the important role that these misunderstood friends of ours play in nature, and marvel at their stealth as they fly. Then discover what you can do to help preserve bat habitats. Meet at the boat launch parking lot.
July 19 - 2:00 p.m.: Walk with Mrs. Cowan. Come along on a walk with "Mrs. Cowan!" This walk will focus on our oxygenproducing friends: trees. Have you ever heard anyone say "They're just trees?" Find out what is so special about trees and learn how you can help protect trees in the park and at home. Meet at the beach area.
These programs are free of charge and open to the public. For more information, contact Beth Garner, environmental education specialist, at 717-485- 3948 or by e-mail at NRCowansEEPrograms@ state.pa.us.
