Henry M. Powell
Henry Melvin Powell, 85, Hancock, Md., died Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown.
He attended Warfordsburg schools.
He was a veteran of World War II from 1942 to 1946, serving in the U.S. Navy as an aircraft mechanic.
He was empoyed as a mechanical draftsman for various aircraft manufacturing companies, including Fairchild, Lockheed Martin, Grumman and Boeing Aircraft.
He was a member of American Legion Post 561 and VFW Post 410 of McConnellsburg.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association and AARP.
He was a member of May's Chapel Christian Church.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, Pirates baseball, family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are five daughters: Jackie Booth and husband Glenn, Front Royal, Va.; Verleen Liner, Joyce Fritz and husband Winston, all of Hancock; Billie Charlene Bell, Manassas, Va.; and Patricia Owings, Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons: Melvin Dennis Powell and wife Nancy, Needmore; and Henry Keith "Bud" Powell and wife Debbie, Stephenson, Va.; two sisters: Vi Bowers, Hancock, and Naomi Rummel, Mount Vernon, Ohio; one brother, Johnny Powell, Warfordsburg; 17 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four brothers: Stanley, Floyd, Carl and Donald Powell; and three sisters: Estelle Apple, Opal Seavolt and Louise Seavolt.
Services were held Wednesday, June 24, at 11:00 a.m., at May's Chapel Christian Church, Warfordsburg. Rev. Delmas Bard officiated. Burial, with military services by Tri-State Honor Guard, was made in the church cemetery.
