Cowans Gap Activities
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following.
July 1 - 1:00 p.m.: Family Backpack Adventure
Families with children are invited to go on an outdoor adventure! Adventures begin at the Brightbill Interpretive Center with a brief introduction by the park naturalist. After that, families will select a themed backpack, which includes materials for parents to guide their children in fun outdoor activities. Backpack themes may include birds, butterflies, insects, preschool activities or others. These adventures are designed for families to spend some quality time together in the outdoors.
Backpack numbers are limited, are loaned out on a firstcome, first-served basis, and must be returned by 3:00 p.m. that day.
July 2 - 1:00 p.m.: Child's Play
Very young children will enjoy this program that includes a story, craft and outdoor activity! Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
July 3 - 7:30 p.m.: Jewels on the Wing
Most people enjoy watching hummingbirds. The design of their bills is just perfect for slurping tasty nectar from deep inside flowers, and the jewel tones of their feathers are so enchanting. Come learn more about these tiny birds in this slideshow presentation at the Brightbill Interpretive Center.
July 4 - 8:00 p.m.: License to Fly!
Come learn about the amazing lives of bats and find out what you can do to help these little bug-zappers. Then watch as our bats make their first flight of the evening. This bat watch is extra special, because our little brown bat pups are just learning how to fly! Meet at the bat boxes between the park office and amphitheater.
July 5 - 2:00 p.m.: Walk with Mrs. Cowan
Come along on a walk with "Mrs. Cowan." This walk, designed especially for young children, will introduce participants to the world of insects. The program will conclude with a special kids bug hunt! Meet at the beach area.
July 6 - 10:00 a.m.: Riding the Trails
Come join us for a program to learn the basics of mountain biking. The program includes a short lesson on using the mountain bike as well as a lesson on preparing for your experience. Then, join in a ride along one of the park's biking trails. Bring water and snacks for breaks. Meet at the Amphitheater; - 1:30 p.m.: Nature Photography Series: Pictures the Memories
Have you ever looked at a picture and wondered whom it was of or where it was taken? Come learn about creating a photo journal of your park experience. Learn how capturing your memories in pictures will help protect the environment. Also, pick up tips about improving your nature photographs. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as we will be going on a short hike to take pictures.
