Arrest Made In Philly 'Flash Mob' Beating
PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Police have made an arrest in an attack during a near-riot on Philadelphia's South Street.
Police Capt. Laurence Nodiff says the 21-year-old man arrested Friday is one of eight who knocked a man off his bicycle May 30 and "brutally beat him to unconsciousness.''
The victim had skull, rib and facial fractures, and internal injuries. He was on life support at a hospital for days and remained hospitalized in stable condition on Friday.
Nodiff says he expects more arrests soon.
The melee involved an estimated 100 teenagers and young adults. Police have said it appeared to be a "flash mob'' in which many young people are alerted to gather in one place at the same time using online social networking.
