4-H Food Drive For Food Basket Saturday

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Fulton County 4-H members will be out in force on Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon to collect nonperishable food items and/or donations for the Fulton County Food Basket. The members will be set up across the county at the Hustontown Post Office, Lincoln Way Market, Harr's Grocery Store, Gordon's Cruise-in Ice Cream Shop and Wilkins Farm & Home Supply.

Fulton County is home to approximately 14,950 residents who live in about 5,000 households. In March of 2008, the Food Basket provided services to 122 households and 315 individuals; this March it served 125 households and 321 individuals. In April 2008, 118 households and 302 individuals were provided services; in April of this year the Food Basket served 139 households and 346 individuals. It had seven new families request assistance in April.

The summer is a particularly tough time for the Food Basket, as most food drives are done around the holiday season, and in the summer families who depend on assistance have schoolchildren home for two extra meals that they would normally have eaten at school. The 4-H clubs of Fulton County are hoping that residents will come out and support the Food Basket by dropping of donations.
