Benjamin H. Shives

Benjamin H. Shives, 87, Upper Strasburg, died Thursday, May 21, 2009, in Chambersburg Hospital.

Born February 25, 1922, in Mercersburg, Franklin County, he was a son of the late Benjamin F. and Effie C. Rager Shives.

He retired from Letterkenny Army Depot. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, serving in Normandy, northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and central Europe and received the World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze Stars. He was a life member of Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, Chambersburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary K. McFadden Shives, who died July 17, 1999, and two sisters are also deceased.

Surviving are a son, Kenneth T. Shives and his wife, Donna, Upper Strasburg; two grandchildren: Zachary Shives and his wife, Tangie, Upper Strasburg, and Heather Impriano and her husband, Brad, Newtown Square; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert D. Shives, and his companion, Becky Sowers, Cove Gap; five sisters: Iva Seiders, McConnellsburg; Ruth Barnhart, Chambersburg; Jane Carty, Greencastle; Betty Ernst, East Waterford; and Rachel Gray, Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 23, at 1:30 p.m., in Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., Shippensburg. Rev. Dr. Ronald S. McElwee and Rev. Dr. Ronald S. McElwee officiated. Burial, with military honors conducted by Shippensburg American Legion and VFW posts were made in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
