Job Fair Draws More Seekers, Few Employers
ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Economists say employment tends to trails economic trends, with jobs not rebounding until months after economic recovery is under way.
An eastern Pennsylvania job fair seems to bear that out. The Morning Call/CareerBuilder Fair drew only 46 employers seeking job applicants on Tuesday. That's down from 70 last year.
But nearly 3,000 job seekers roamed Allentown's CocaCola Park ballpark, about a third more than the previous year.
Employers are offering more hope than jobs. Staffmark employment agency area manager Jim Kercher had only about 100 jobs available for more than 600 applicants, for example. But Kercher says the fact clients are again seeking temporary workers may be a sign of economic growth.
