Activities At Cowans Gap State Park

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of State Parks, and Cowans Gap State Park would like to announce the following.

Memorial weekend activities at Cowans Gap

May 20 - Green Team Series: Birding

All senior citizens are invited to join in a morning birding walk in the park. Binoculars and field guides will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 9:00 a.m. to join in this gentle walk.

May 22 - Bats of PA

Learn about those fast-flying bug eaters in this in this program featuring a video about bats. Find out what species of bats live in Pennsylvania, and why they are such an important part of our world. Meet at the Brightbill Interpretive Center at 7:30 p.m.

May 23 - Bats' Birthday Party

Little brown bat babies are being born right now at Cowans Gap, and to celebrate the park is having a bat birthday party! There will be games and activities, presents and, of course, birthday cake. The party starts at 7:00 p.m. at the Brightbill Interpretive Center. Come celebrate!

Directly following the Bats Birthday Party (by 8:00 p.m.), travel to the park bat box colony to watch the little brown bat mommas make their first insecteating flight of the evening. The park naturalist will be on hand to talk about these amazing creatures and to answer your questions about them. You may want to bring a blanket to sit on as you observe the beauty and skill of the bats in flight.

May 24 - Walk with Mrs. Cowan

Come along on a walk with "Mrs. Cowan!" This walk begins by making a set of binoculars out of re-purposed materials. (Mrs. Cowan is all about recycling!) Then use your new binoculars on a gentle walk in the park. This walk is designed especially for families with young children. Meet at the beach area at 2:00 p.m.
