Pa. Unemployment Claims Drop Slightly Last Week
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - The number of people filing for unemployment benefits in Pennsylvania dropped slightly last week, as did the number of people receiving them.
The state Department of Labor and Industry released the new statistics Thursday.
More than 34,300 people filed for unemployment compensation last week, down from 36,000 the previous week. More than 364,200 continued receiving the benefits, a weekly drop of about 7,000.
Both figures are about twice as high as a year ago.
To pay for the benefits, Pennsylvania continues to borrow more money from the federal government.
State officials say that paying back the money will mean that taxes on employers and employees will have to rise.
