Western Va Man Among 19 Carnegie Heroes
PITTSBURGH (AP) - A western Virginia man who saved another person from electrocution has won a Carnegie medal for heroism.
Ledford Wayne Arthur is among 19 Carnegie Hero winners announced Thursday.
The 53-year-old man from Paint Bank, in Craig County, Va., was cited for saving Dennis Williams from being electrocuted while they were repairing a commercial oven on April 20, 2007.
Steel baron Andrew Carnegie launched the hero fund in 1904 after hearing about rescue stories from a mine disaster that had killed 181 people. Since then, $31.2 million has been awarded to 9,262 people. Recipients receive $6,000 and a medal.
