Trial Beginning For Va. Man In 30-Year-Old Murder

EASTON, Pa. (AP) - A Virginia man is going on trial in eastern Pennsylvania in a 30-year-old murder case.

Opening statements are scheduled Monday in Northampton County Court in the trial of Robert White Jr., of Roanoke.

White is charged with killing 21-year-old Virginia Morrell on Halloween night in 1978.

Morrell's body was found nude, bound and gagged inside her one-room apartment in Easton. Investigators say she had been asphyxiated.

White has served time for attempted rape and was convicted in Virginia of abduction and rape in 1982. He came to the attention of Easton authorities after evidence from the 1978 case was resubmitted for DNA testing.

The district attorney is seeking the death penalty.
