Prothonotary's Race Heads Spring Primary

March 10 was deadline for nominating petitions for those seeking local office
By Chanin Rotz-Mountz STAFF WRITER

Patty Fix Patty Fix To ensure beating last Tuesday's filing deadline, nominating petitions have been streaming into the Fulton County Board of Elections Office in recent weeks from local candidates seeking a variety of township, borough and county positions. Those same candidates will find themselves in fewer numbers following the May 19 municipal primary election, when registered Republicans and Democrats will nominate a certain number of candidates to represent their parties and interests.

The race for prothonotary will likely heat up in the two months leading up to the spring primary with a total of three candidates seeking office for the position currently occupied by incumbent Patty Suders Fix. Fix is seeking an additional four-year term of office and will square off against political newcomer Lisa Mellott Skiles for the Republican Party's nomination in May. Democratic contender Brandon Fletcher is uncontested in the spring, but during the November 3 municipal election will likely face off against the Republican candidate receiving the largest amounts of votes.

Wishing to secure a fifth term of office as prothonotary, Fix also serves in the capacity of clerk of courts, recorder of deeds, register of wills and clerk of the orphans court. She previously announced she continues to strive as she did in her first-term to operate an "efficient, professional and well organized office."

Brandon Fletcher Brandon Fletcher Fix pointed out when she first took office in 1994, she was fortunate enough to have a staff with a combined 35 years of experience. With the recent retirement of Thelma Reed and Neva Houck, Fix stated the job has become even more challenging as she is in a transitional state, training new employees within all five offices. In regard to the current economic strife the world is facing, she is stepping up efforts to find methods of saving money within her office while continuing to operate it efficiently.

Waterfall area resident Lisa Mellott Skiles has cited her work experience at Letterkenny Army Depot as well as 18 years experience operating her own business as qualifications pertinent to running the office of prothonotary. Through those efforts, Skiles stated she has learned important lessons in accuracy, precision and working with the public.

Lisa Skiles Lisa Skiles "I feel that my past and present experiences make me a good candidate," Skiles previously stated. "I am dependable, honest and fair ... I feel it would be an honor to serve the community as prothonotary. I would appreciate the community's support and vote in the upcoming election."

Democrat Brandon Fletcher of Harrisonville announced to the "News" last week he has logged time in court and has experience in customer support, which would serve him well in the capacity of prothonotary. He is a graduate of Shippensburg University, with a bachelor's degree in the field of criminal justice.

"I believe that my knowledge and background related to the court and experience in helping others as a customer support professional would be an asset to the voters of Fulton County," said Fletcher. "I am confident that my past experiences and education have well prepared me for the duties of this office."

Additional county offices

Democrat Doretta K. Mellott and Republican Glenn "Pete" Ford, both incumbents, are unchallenged for their positions as jury commissioner during the May primary. The jury commissioner position includes a fouryear term of office.

Magisterial District Judge Wendy Richards Mellott is unopposed on the Democratic ballot this spring for a six-year term of office. No Republican candidates have filed nominating petitions for this position, which spans Ayr and Todd townships as well as Mc- Connellsburg Borough.
