SFHS Ensemble Begins A New Tradition

Southern Fulton Ensemble Southern Fulton Ensemble Southern Fulton High School Ensemble has been performing for more than 35 years. On March 14, 2009, the chorus begins a new tradition with the first annual Ensemble Invitational Concert. Each year, one or two other high schools will be invited to perform with the Ensemble as part of its "Music In Our Schools Month Concert." March is designated "Music In Our Schools Month" by the Music Educators National Conference and is celebrated by schools across the country.

This year, James Buchanan High School's Messa Voce, under the direction of Eric M. Poe, will travel to Southern Fulton to perform. The group will perform both traditional and popular choral music. The SFHS Ensemble, under the direction of Dan Meredith, will also perform a variety of music, from Broadway to jazz to popular music from various decades. The two groups will combine for a rousing gospel number, "Praise His Holy Name," and "America, the Beautiful."

The tradition of the Ensemble concert began in the late 1970s as a Christmas dinner concert. In the late 1980s, the concert became a "Music In Our Schools Month Concert." In the early 1990s, the event was chang-ed from a dinner concert to an ice cream social.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 14. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for students. Proceeds will benefit the SFHS Choral Activity Fund. The public is invited to attend and enjoy the musical talents of students from two area high schools.
