Herman Emory Ritchey

Six Mile Run, 86

Herman Emory Ritchey, 86, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at Pennknoll Village.

He was born in Six Mile Run, Pa., November 10, 1922, a son of the late Herman and Halabelle (Noel) Ritchey. In 1943, he married the former Phyllis Swope. She preceded him in death in 1979. He later married Emma Wright. She passed away in 2001.

He is survived by three children: Delbert Ritchey, married to Rena, Stewartstown, Pa.; Dennis Ritchey, married to Jean, Robertsdale; Pamela, married to Dan McGhee, Carlisle; eight grandchildren: Chris, Chad, Clay, Delbert, Mark and Kevin Ritchey, and Ryan and Jennifer McGhee; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Dorothy Reed, Saxton and Grace Cruse, Altoona.

He was preceded in death by four siblings: Harry Ritchey, Harvey Ritchey, Goldie Reed and Nellie Smith.

He was a longtime member of the Broad Top Church of the Nazarene where he attended services faithfully. He really enjoyed going to the services and worshipping the Lord. As a resident of Carrol's Rest Home he enjoyed singing hymns with the various groups who went there to entertain the residents.

He was employed in a variety of jobs during his working career. In the late 40s and early 50s he and his brother, Harvey, operated a coalmine in the North Point area. In 1954, he moved his family to Wells Tannery where he worked as a farmer until 1963. He later worked as a road construction worker. With his wife, Phyllis, he operated a store in Wood in the late 70s.

His hobbies included gardening, riding his three-wheeler, taking his grandsons on camping trips in his bus-camper and going on long walks in the Six Mile Run area.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 7, 2009, at 3:00 p.m., at Akers Funeral Chapel. Rev. Ronald L. Shehan and Pastor Paul Bowen officiated. Burial was in Broad Top I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Broad Top City.
