      The Southern Alleghenies Chapter of the American Red Cross volunteers have been busy responding to fires. More fires occur in the winter months, but this year has been overwhelming. Each week since January 1 there has been at least one major fire in each of he chapter's four counties.

Bid Results For I-70 Br idge Projects
      PennDOT announced recently the bid results for the I- 70 project to replace three different superstructures carrying traffic over I-70 in Union and Bethel townships, Fulton County. The project will rehabilitate three bridge structures on Route 731 and Route 3006, all carrying traffic over I-70.

      PennDOT announced last week that bids have been accepted for the I-70 design/build culvert project in Bethel Township, Fulton County. C.H.&D Enterprises Inc., New Stanton, was the lowest of four bidders to win the contract with a bid amount of $1,702,962.

Man Charged After 5 Pa. Boys Found With Heroin
      PHILADELPHIA (AP) _- A Philadelphia man has been arrested on drug and other charges a day after five secondgrade boys were found with packets of heroin that they were passing around in their elementary school. Police say 35-year-old Robert Parks is charged with possession of narcotics, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment of another person.

Pa. Fire Departments Seek Smoking Ban Exemption
      APOLLO, Pa. (AP) - Some volunteer fire departments say Pennsylvania's smoking ban is hurting their bingo fundraisers and they want an exemption. Bill Walker of Apollo's department, says about 80 people had attended bingo the week before the ban took effect. Attendance last week was 13 and seven the week before.

Judge Walsh Presides Over Court Session
      Judge Richard J. Walsh of the 39th Judicial District of the Court of Common Pleas presided over a court session held on Tuesday, February 3, at the Fulton County Courthouse. Shane William Meck appeared with legal counsel and waived arraignment proceedings held on one count each of false reports, criminal conspiracy and unsworn falsification to authorities.

15-Year-Old Boy Charged In Rape And Attempted Rape
      ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - Authorities in eastern Pennsylvania say a 15-year-old boy raped a teen at knifepoint and attempted to rape another girl the following day before police intervened. Authorities say the attacks occurred this week in Allentown, where the suspect lives.

      LYONS, Pa. (AP) - A train that hit a car has killed an eastern Pennsylvania man. Officials say a Norfolk Southern freight train hit the car about 1 a.m. Friday at a crossing in Lyons Borough, about 75 miles northwest of Philadelphia.

Pa. Town Fighting Arsons
      COATESVILLE, Pa. (AP) - The state is providing $500,000 to help a suburban Philadelphia town battle a plague of arsons, 18 of which have occurred since the start of the year. Gov. Ed Rendell says Coatesville is "under siege'' by whoever is responsible for the fires. He says the city's budget cannot cope with the crisis.

      Pennsylvania farmers are reminded that the final date to apply or crop insurance on most insurable spring-planted crops for this year is March 16, 2009, according to the Raleigh Regional Office, USDA Risk Management Agency. Because the sales closing date of March 15 falls on Sunday this year, the deadline will be the next business day.

Employee Stole $101K From Parking Meters
      NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) - The former head of a parking authority in western Pennsylvania is accused of stealing more than $101,000 from the city's parking meters. Thirty-three-year-old Gary Stone Jr., of New Castle, was laid off last year when the city was declared a financially distressed under state Act 47.

Church Members Complete Emergency Training Course
     Members of the Needmore Bible Church recently completed an emergency training course delving into CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators. Randy Zeger of East Coast First Aid Co. instructed the 20 students during the class held on January 17 at the church, which will be placing its newly acquired AED in the newer portion of its facility.
