Hess Announces House Committee Assignments
Rep. Dick Hess (R-Bedford/ Fulton/Huntingdon) last Thursday announced his committee assignments for the 2009- 10 legislative session in the House of Representatives.
He will again serve as Republican chairman of the Commerce Committee. As one of the most important committees in the House, the Commerce Committee is responsible for oversight of economic development and banking issues throughout the commonwealth.
"We have our work cut out for us this year, especially with the downturn of the economy," Hess said. "I am committed to working with my colleagues in a bipartisan manner to create effective policies that are beneficial to rehabilitation of Pennsylvania's economic climate."
In addition, Hess will also serve on the Committee on Committees and the Transportation Committee.
The Committee on Committes is charged with assigning members of the House to a standing committee that best matches their interests, experience and background.
"Its a long process to review committee requests by members and ensure they are assined to committees that benefit the legislative process," Hess said. "Although the committee typically meets at the beginning of each session, we do coordinate committee assignments throughout the year if there is a change in the complement of the membership."
Hess also has retained his position as a ranking Republican member of the House Transportation Committee for the new session. He said he and his committee colleagues must work to address some immediate transportatin problems facing the commonealth.
"This will be a critical year and a critical legislative session for transportation in Pennsylvania," Hess said. "There are tens of thousands of miles of roads and 6,000 structurally deficient bridges across the commonwealth in need of repair. Obviously, the question is one of funding, and we will have to examine our transportation infrastructure needs from a comprehensive viewpoint. It will be a challenge, and I am ready to actively purse feasible solutions."
