Man Jailed For Hiring Hitman To Kill Horses

GREENSBURG, Pa. (AP) - A western Pennsylvania man will spend up to one year in jail for trying to hire a hitman to kill his estranged wife's two horses.

Thirty-five-year-old Joseph Mendicino of Scottsdale is already in jail for violating a protection from-abuse order. On Friday, Mendicino pleaded guilty to charges he took out a contract on his estranged wife's horses and tried to run her off the road.

Police say Mendicino tried to arrange the hit on the horses from the Westmoreland County Prison. Mendicino initially talked to another inmate about hurting his wife's new boyfriend and her horses. The inmate informed county police who set up a sting operation and had a detective pose as a horse hitman during a phone call with Mendicino.
