The countdown continues as we inch closer to the start of the racing season here in the midstate area.
But before the green flag waves around here, the dirt will be flying in Florida beginning this Thursday as the All-Star Sprints kick off the season at Ocala Speedway. Ocala will host the All-Stars through Saturday night then it's over to Volusia Speedway Park next week for six nights of All Star and World of Outlaws racing. The World of Outlaws Late Models will also be in competition at VSP.
Many Pennsylvania teams plan to head south this week including Greg Hodnett, Cody Darrah, Fred Rahmer, Doug Esh, Mark Smith and the Pete's Motorsports team with new driver Daryn Pittman.
Hagerstown Speedway's season isn't too far away as it plans to open February 21 with 410 Sprints and Late Models. The track will use a Sunday, January 22 raindate.
Hagerstown's Race A Rama car show is also coming up several days prior to its first race. For more information on that, contact the speedway.
Lincoln Speedway is all set for a Saturday February 28 opener for the 410 Sprints with a Sunday raindate as well for that event.
Pete's Motorsports announced this week that Oklahoma's Daryn Pittman will drive the car in Florida this week, then the team hopes to secure sponsorship to bring Pittman east to race in Pennsylvania for the 2009 season. But so far the team has yet to secure any additional funding to compete an entire season.
Stevie Smith is gearing up for his start aboard the Zemco Speed equipment sprinter in 2009. Smith was hired during the offseason, and the team plans to run more races than it did in the past. It will hit all of the big shows in the area as well as in Ohio and Knoxville.
That's a wrap for this week and if you would like your 2009 plans published in this column, please e-mail them to me so we can get you and your sponsors some press. E-mail always reaches me at Bvores@aol.com.
