Vera A. Jay
She was born December 23, 1904, in Fulton County, Pa., the daughter of Alvah T. Foster and Belle Ash Foster.
For 19 years she taught in one-room schools in Bedford and Fulton counties before she married Coy Jay, a widower with four children, and lived in Johnstown, Pa., for more than 40 years before she returned to live in Fulton County.
She was an active member of Fairview Christian Church. She was a devoted teacher, church youth leader, assistant Girl Scout leader, often a primary caregiver and always a loving mother, homemaker, family member and friend. Her faith sustained her.
She is survived by her daughter, Millie Jay Steinke, and husband Robert, Artemas, Pa.; son, John A. Jay and wife Jacque of Myersville, Md.; and three of Coy's other surviving children: Helen deWilde of Boca Raton, Fla.; Marian Slick Allen of Johnstown, Pa.; and Eileen Newbaker of Bradenton, Fla. The surviving extended family includes five grandchildren: William M. Jay, Robert Jay, Russell Jay, Norman Slick and Kathy Newbaker, five great-grandchildren, and five great- great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Coy, who died in 1959; a grandson, Christian Newbaker; a stepson, William E. Jay; and sisters Ada McKee and MaryAnn Foster.
Services were held at Fairview Christian Church, Artemas, Saturday, January 3, 2009. Rev. Dr. Robert E. Steinke and Pastor Milton Morris officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.
