Fire That Gutted Prohibition-Era Bar Probed
PITTSBURGH (AP) - Pittsburgh fire and police officials are investigating a fire that gutted a Prohibition-era bar and some neighboring businesses.
The Modern Cafe has been a landmark bar in the city's North Side neighborhood since Prohibition ended in 1933. The fire apparently started about 2 a.m. Thursday in a flower shop next to the bar in an L-shaped building.
The structure dates to the 1880s and also contained a salon and some upstairs apartments that were also heavily damaged.
Interior scenes for the 2000 movie "Wonder Boys'' starring Michael Douglas were shot in the bar.
