Dog Rescued From Fire Dies
CICERO, Ill. (AP) - Authorities in the Chicago suburb of Cicero say a dog whose owner died after trying to rescue his pet from a house fire has died at a veterinary clinic.
Regis, a 13-year-old German Shepherd mix, died early Thanksgiving Day.
Regis' owner, 68-year-old John Petrik died of a heart attack after a Nov. 12 fire in his home. Cicero police had to forcibly remove Petrik from the home because he had refused to leave, saying he didn't want to abandon his dog.
Petrik suffered the attack in a police car as firefighters went into the house and saved Regis.
A veterinarian says Regis suffered burns and smoke inhalation, but recovered from those problems. His death was due to long-term kidney failure.
